Dana and Sam(s), The Dynamic Duo

The dynamic duo is at it again!

Ben Sams (of the fabulous ceramic sculptures) and Dana Boussard (of the incredible fabric sculptures) are having their first one-man show in some months at the Richard White Gallery. through April, and it should not be missed. . . .

Sams’ stonewear pieces were often downright frightening--those leering, demented faces peering out of the most extraordinary nooks and crannies.  They were often so menacing one was hesitant to turn one's back on them.

These new ceramic sculptures often make comments as trenchant as before but they do it in a subtler fashion.

Examining a Sams’ sculpture requires an unfolding process--one begins with the obvious faces, heads, and appurtenances and then slowly, begins to see the other wonders the artist has incorporated into his figures. . . .

As you may have guessed, it is practically impossible to describe Sams' work.  It is better to experience it.

While Sams' work has grown somewhat smaller, Dana Boussard's work has grown larger and more elaborate (while the disciplined craftsmanship that always marked both of their efforts, if anything, has increased). . . .

Her work is as incredible, as delightful, as awe-inspiring and eventually as indescribable as Sams' things.  The two artists are still in their twenties.  At the rate they are growing, the mind boggles in contemplating what they will be doing, say, another decade from now.
